Inspiration

It’s funny how things stick in your mind.

I was just out and about minding my own business today when I glanced up at the sky, it’s been pretty overcast and rainy recently, but the sun managed to break through a patch of clouds.

After seeing the work of Robert Longo yesterday something clicked into place.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Project365

I started a new Project365 a few weeks ago and for some reason fancied doing it on BlipFoto.

It’s more of a personal thing to make sure I get myself into gear and actually work everyday!

I do post a lot of stuff here and on my Facebook page, but the stuff that doesn’t quite make the cut is going on Blip regardless.

If you’re interested in having a look this is the link Richard Berry on BlipFoto

I’m going to be revamping the blog here over the coming week so that it makes a bit more sense, there’s lots of redundant categories and some that I’d like to add!

Beautiful Bluebells

My photographer friend Dayve Ward told me about this enchanting bluebell wood yesterday, so I was out the door at 5:30am this morning to see what I could find! (Apparently I didn’t go quite far enough after talking to him this morning, so I’ll be back there again tomorrow!)

On a side note, I figured out NextGen Galleries for the blog so there will be some experimentation on how images are presented on here.

In this case we’ve got thumbnails or a slideshow, click the thumbnail for a larger version which allows you to scroll through, to come back to this post just click the large image and it will close.

Note* I apologise for the lower resolution of these images, I thought I would get away with that for viewing online only, but some are looking a litte ‘bitty’.

Sounds Good, Thanks Flickr!

I have this real love hate relationship with Flickr, but I recently subscribed again for 2 years, based purely on how good the SEO on Flickr seems to be.

In light of the recent changes however, I can get about, oh I don’t know, around 220,000 images on Flickr… Considering I only ever upload one image a day and not necessarily every day I had to take advantage of the downgrade and refund.

Thanks Flickr!

Oh, the main benefit of paying seems to be ‘an ad free experience’, but I don’t recall seeing advertising on the internet so I can’t see any advantage to paying.

Samyang 2.8/8mm 1:2.8 8mm UMC Fish-Eye Mirrorless Lens

Oh this is going to be a lot of fun!!!

I couldn’t wait to put something up taken with this lens!

I previously owned a 14mm Samyang 2.8 14mm for my D800 which was one of my favourite lenses and I thought that was wide. This thing is ridiculous! 180 degree field of view?! awesome cool distortion? Oh yes I think I can do things with this.

The two images below are exactly the same, except I ran the lens correction profile for a Nikon 10.5 Fish-Eye lens on it in Lightroom 4.

The top image is as it was out of the camera, I didn’t mess around processing these.

It’s a manual focus lens so I just pushed it to infinity for this one. (Click the image for larger view)

DSCF8386 X-Pro1 (50mm, f/1, 1/125 sec, ISO800)

This is the version that has been corrected, you can see how stretched the armchair on the left has become. This might not be such a big deal when things are further away. I’ll play with that another time. (Click the image for larger view)

DSCF8386-2 X-Pro1 (50mm, f/1, 1/125 sec, ISO800)

One thing I will say is that the Fuji X-Pro1 doesn’t recognise the the settings on this lens, for example the manual focus scale shows in the viewfinder, but no information is passed from the lens to the camera. This seems to be true of the aperture value as well, which shows F0.

The camera needs to be set to the mode “SHOOT WITHOUT LENS” for this lens to work as well.

(Dodgy screenshot from my iPhone)

Looking at it there are no connectors on the back so that explains that. No big deal really.

This is just my observations after rushing to get the lens on and have a play!

I’ll put it to proper use and do a more in depth write up soon.

Bank Holiday Monday

I love photographing in the rain, there is some comfort in being under a big umbrella sheltered from the weather and in some ways from the world.

Here are a few shots from today in Kendal, please click for a larger view.

I used one of the Detail and Clarity presets that I recently downloaded from these guys: https://www.facebook.com/PresetsGalore to process these, quite an interesting effect.

Eye Eye!

I’ve been meaning to have a crack at a macro shot of an eye for a long time.

I have to say a big thanks to my five year old daughter Amanda for managing to keep still, at least so I could get one reasonable shot!

I think I need to find a more patient model to get a cleaner result, but it’s not too bad really.

Fuji X-Pro1 night time lapse

I went out today to see if I could pull off a time lapse with my Fuji X-Pro1.

Keep in mind this camera has no official function to do this, no intervalometer and a shutter release that uses a manual mechanical trigger.

So I figured that if I was doing 20 second exposures (or there abouts) and set the camera to continuous drive then surely the camera would have enough time to write the files before the buffer filled up.

I was right! It worked really nicely. I just used my cable release that has a lock on it, set it going and it did its thing!

I’ll admit that it looks a little rough, it’s just proof of concept at the moment.

Having said that, it is definitely possible to do time lapse on this camera. At least at night!

My settings were pretty much as follows;

Long exposure noise reduction off
Drive mode continuous 3fps (but I don’t suppose it matters if it’s 3 or 6)

ISO: 1600
Aperture: F2.8
Focal Length: 14mm
Exposure time: 20s

The time lapse is running at 24fps

Here is the video, it’s two very short clips (for now!)
